What is a stalagmite?

A stalagmite is indeed a mineral formation that rises from the floor of caves, forming through the slow deposition of minerals from dripping water. As water seeps through the cave ceiling, it often picks up dissolved minerals, such as calcium carbonate. When the water drips to the floor of the cave and evaporates, it leaves behind these minerals, which gradually build up over time to create the stalagmite.

Stalagmites usually grow upwards and can take on various shapes and sizes. Together with stalactites, which hang from the ceiling, they create fascinating formations that are often a highlight for visitors touring caves. Understanding stalagmites helps to appreciate the geologic processes that shape the cave environment, adding to the educational aspect of cave tours.
